Srilankan Sapphire on the Royal Throne
Srilanka’s gems reputed the world over made headlines once again as the star studded blue sapphire found its way to the royal palace on the engagement ring from prince william to kate middleton. That 12-carat oval blue sapphire on the ring, which raised speculation as to its origin, was Sri Lanka ’s contribution to the grandeur of Britain ’s Royal Heirloom. The ring was the same one that William’s father, Prince Charles, gave Lady Diana Spencer on their engagement in 1981.
The sapphire alone is worth about $300,000 retail, and the whole ring about a half-million dollars.
Sapphires are rarer than diamonds but less expensive because demand for them is lower. They’re especially beloved in Britain and its former colonies, including Sri Lanka.
